Redefining What is Possible in Milwaukee’s Food Scene

In the heart of Milwaukee, Jesus Gonzalez has transformed a simple food truck into a vibrant community hub that celebrates culture, creativity and connection. As a first-generation Mexican American and the co-founder of Zocalo Food Truck Park, Jesus combines his culinary passion with a mission to uplift fellow food entrepreneurs and create a gathering space for all.

The Journey Begins: From Mazorka Tacos to Zocalo

Jesus Gonzalez's culinary journey began in 2017 when he launched Mazorka Tacos, a food truck that aims to share his Mexican heritage through food. After studying at the Culinary Institute of America and living in New York, he returned to Milwaukee, ready to introduce himself to the local culinary scene. With limited resources, he chose the food truck route to bring his vision to life.

"I didn't have half a million dollars... so I started looking at alternatives," Jesus explains.

His humble beginnings at First and Pittsburgh showcased not just delicious tacos but also a willingness to engage with the community, fostering connections with other food entrepreneurs.

Creating Zocalo: A Hub for Food Entrepreneurs

In 2019, Jesus and his partner Sean Phelan took a significant leap by transforming an empty gravel lot into Zocalo Food Truck Park. Their vision was to create a plaza-like environment that would serve as a gathering place for Milwaukeeans.

Jesus emphasizes the importance of community, sharing, "We wanted to create a space where we could all work together and grow this community."

Zocalo quickly evolved into more than just a food truck park; it became a cultural epicenter hosting various events, live music, and art.

Emphasizing Community and Collaboration

One of the standout features of Zocalo is Jesus's commitment to supporting fellow food entrepreneurs.

He believes in the idea of collective growth, stating, "If you look back at the last six years, we all started with an idea and a vision, but we've all been able to evolve together."

Jesus' upbringing in a Mexican household taught him the value of supporting one another, and he has applied this principle to foster a collaborative environment where local food vendors can thrive together.

The Unique Essence of Zocalo

Zocalo is not just a place to grab a bite; it's a vibrant plaza where diverse communities come together. Jesus draws inspiration from his travels, particularly in Mexico City, where plazas serve as social hubs. He aims to replicate that experience in Milwaukee, creating a space where people from all walks of life can gather.

"I always felt that we just didn't have this plaza in Milwaukee quite yet, prior to me moving back," he shares.

The result is a place that transcends traditional food truck concepts, offering an eclectic mix of food, music, and art that reflects the community's spirit.
