NEWaukeean: Sarah Dollhausen
How long have you lived in Milwaukee & what brought you here?
Well, I was born and raised in Milwaukee, so I’d have to say my parents brought me here about 37 (almost 38!) years ago.
Was there a point where you decided this was the city you wanted to live in?
I have struggled over the years to stay in Milwaukee. With the line of work I am in (youth and community work, running a nonprofit) there are many times I feel hopeless and overwhelmed with the issues we face; unemployment, lack of opportunities for youth, #1 segregated/institutionalized racism, and wanting to explore other opportunities but at the end of the day, this is my home and Milwaukee needs invested individuals to stay here to work through the issues we face.
What strikes you as the most unique thing about Milwaukee?
The amount of incredible talent. Musicians, Artists, Creative minds, inspirational stories. Many do not know the historical and current talent pool we have; from Grammy Award winning producers/musicians, guitarists, inventors, visual artists.
What is your favorite Milwaukee event?
Anything with food trucks. And the NEWaukee Night Market…but I am a bit biased cause our amazing youth DJ that event. ☺
What have you seen in other cities that you’d like to see in Milwaukee?
A more collaborative and inclusive approach to community building.
What is the one thing you’d like to change about Milwaukee?
Institutional racism and lack of opportunities for young people. (I know that’s two, but I couldn’t’ chose which one!)
Is there an issue you believe all Milwaukeeans should turn our attention to?
Institutional racism and lack of opportunities for young people. #repeatingmyself
What is the perfect thing to do in Milwaukee on a Sunday afternoon?
Bike riding the Hank Aaron Trail.
Where do you see MKE in 5 years?
As a creative hub, lead by local creatives and young artists/musicians.
What do you think of Milwaukee as a place to work and do business?
I love having my business, TRUE Skool, based in MKE. I have been asked many times over the years from other cities and international government agencies about starting satellite TRUE Skool’s but Milwaukee is where this was born and is most important. This is a great place to work if you are able to weed out the BS and those who do it for the wrong reasons.
