In partnership with the City of Wauwatosa, NEWaukee is excited to host ART 64 presented by North Shore Bank, a four day bracket-style painting tournament taking place in various locations and businesses!
In four rounds on September 30–October 3, 2020, artists will be paired to go head-to-head and given two hours to create a work of art on a predetermined theme on a 2’x3’ canvas. Members of the public will be invited to watch the paintings come to life and vote for their favorite paintings on the ART 64 web application.
The artist in each pairing with the most votes will advance to the next round. The participating 64 artists will each receive a $50 stipend, their 2’x3’ canvas per round, easel and drop cloth. The final 32 artists will each receive $100, the final 16 artists will each receive $150 and the final eight (8) artists will each receive $500. In the last round, eight artists will compete for a $20,000 grand prize and an opportunity to exhibit their work at Serendipity Labs in Wauwatosa.
All inquiries related to the ART 64 application are to be directed by email to NEWaukee at email@example.com with the subject title “ART 64 Inquiry.” All inquiries must be submitted no later than March 5, 2020 at noon CST.
All applications are required by midnight CST on Monday, March 9, 2020. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
All applications will be reviewed and participants will be selected by NEWaukee and the Art64 Advisory Council, which includes representatives from City of Wauwatosa and Cuatro Uno Cuatro. Selected artists will be notified on April 1, 2020. Selected artists will be paired through random selection for the creation of the bracket.
When notified of their acceptance to the tournament, selected artists will also be provided with themes to respond to during each round. Each work of art must be unique and respond to the given theme. Works cannot be replicated for multiple rounds.
Events will take place in the evening hours, likely between 6 and 9 pm, though official times have not yet been confirmed.
Live painting will take place in various locations and businesses across the city of Wauwatosa in non-conventional spaces, including but not limited to: hotels, restaurants, bars, coworking spaces, coffee shops, retail storefronts, etc. Your medium of choice may determine where you are placed.
NEWaukee will provide all artists with the following:
Artists are solely responsible for all other necessary supplies and materials relating to the creation of their work.
Artists are responsible for their own travel accommodations. Links to preferred hotel partners in the City of Wauwatosa will be provided.
Installation Process & Payment
Following the tournament (September 30–October 3, 2020), NEWaukee will hold all paintings from the tournament for 30 days of exhibition in locations in the city of Wauwatosa. NEWaukee and Art 64 Advisory Council will determine uniform sale price for works. If sold, artists will receive 70% of sale and 30% commission will go to the city of Wauwatosa. If unsold after 30 days of exhibition, artists can claim works from NEWaukee (any shipping fees are the responsibility of the artist). If artists do not claim their artwork within 5 business days, the artist waives their right to their artwork and it will become the property of City of Wauwatosa to donate, repurpose or discard.
The winner of ART 64 will receive $20,000. The winner is solely responsible for any and all additional costs relating to the prize not specifically stated herein. All taxes and fees are the sole responsibility of the winner. NEWaukee reserves – and by entering ART 64, winners grant NEWaukee – the right to use the winner’s name, likeness and artwork for promotional purposes.
ART 64 audience members will vote for their favorite painting per pairing in the tournament through the ART 64 web application. To vote, audience members must 1) enter their zip code through the application; 2) be present within the geo-fenced area of the tournament; and 3) be present during the timeframe voting is open. Audience members are only able to vote once per pairing per round. All votes are counted by NEWaukee. All votes are final and cannot be appealed. Artists who are not present for their pairing during the tournament are automatically disqualified and removed from the competition.

A concept by NEWaukee’s Chief Idea Officer, Jeremy Fojut, the first ever ART 64 painting tournament is coming to Wauwatosa, Wisconsin on September 30–October 3, 2020.
The goal of ART 64 is to create an open art competition in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin that is live, performative, engaging and accessible for both artists and the general public. ART 64 is meant to be a platform for artists and small businesses to build and connect to new audiences.
This is the first year we are piloting ART 64. Our ultimate goal is to increase prizes over time and be able to cover travel costs in the future.
