NEWaukeean: Jessi Young
Where do you work and what makes your role awesome?
I work with Aurora Health Care as their Internship Coordinator in Talent Acquisition. In my role, I get to develop and work on creative programs that build authentic relationships with our community – students, universities, organizations and high schools. I create professional development programming, networking and social events throughout the summer for our interns. The program development in which I’m involved includes experiential recruiting, like our Make it in Milwaukee program where we collaborate with NEWaukee to bring fantastic talent to Milwaukee. I help facilitate our Administrative Fellowship program and internships for healthcare administration graduate students as well as our high school programs. My role is so awesome, because I consistently get to work with people at Aurora and in the community who think outside the box and who work toward being the best for each other and our community. I’m so excited to see where our community is going.
What do you love most about MKE?
I love that I can have a hometown feel with a robust and rich culture. I love the lakes, rivers, streams, the city, the arts, and sports. But I also love how close the city is to farms, fields, cabins, tubing and bonfires. I love what all 4 seasons look like against the lake and the city and the smaller lakes and rural areas. We have a little bit of everything here.
What is one word that you would use to describe MKE?
Recombobulation. (My FAVORITE part of the Milwaukee airport is the recombobulation area/sign.)
What local restaurant is at the top of your list?
Cafe Hollander or Cafe Centraal are good for anything (drinks, brunch, dinner, atmosphere). Odd Duck for tapas. Blue’s egg for brunch. Screaming Tuna for sushi. Story Hill BKC for Old Fashioneds and Manhattans. Honeypie for cupcakes or pie.
What is your biggest hope for this city?
My biggest hope for Milwaukee is for less segregation and more equality. I think there is work to do around equality for women, the LGBTQ community, people of color, people with diverse abilities and all underrepresented individuals. I want everyone to feel like they can bring their whole selves into work and into our community and thrive.
What does your ideal MKE weekend look like?
My ideal Milwaukee weekend would be staying in on Friday enjoying a homemade version of my favorite drink from Lucky Joe’s – Grandad’s Cabin. Saturday would be yoga in the morning at Get Hot Yoga in Tosa or Saffron Yoga in Bay View. I’d go to a farmer’s market and maybe a movie at the Rosebud or watch some roller derby bouts (Brewcity Bruisers). I’d top off the night with drinks at Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge or At Random. And Sunday would be brunch and walking around the lakefront or hiking at one of our state parks and getting coffee at a local coffee shop like Anodyne, Colectivo or Stone Creek.
